In December 2012, the Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF) held a workshop on “Extensive Livestock Research Multi-Stakeholder Research Questions” in Nairobi, Kenya. EAFF is collaborating with several other organisations working in Eastern Africa as part of PAEPARD (Platform for African European Partnerships in Agricultural Research for Development) in creating multi-stakeholder partnerships on agricultural research for development. The consortia comprise both African and European partners. PAEPARD has started a user-led brokerage procedure that gives the lead to the “research-user” partners (especially organisations of farmers, including pastoralists) in handling the brokerage activities. The workshop in Nairobi was a “brokerage workshop” around a theme chosen by Eastern Africa stakeholders (facilitated by EAFF), namely, extensive livestock value chains. The main themes of the Eastern African Livestock Strategy adopted by EAFF are:
1. Improving livestock productivity in agro-pastoral and pastoral systems
2. Enhancing adaptation and coping with climate variability and change
3. Facilitating market access and exploiting market opportunities
4. Improving value addition of livestock products.
