CELEP webinar on “Understanding pastoralism”

On 28 September 2020, CELEP and Misereor teamed up to organise a webinar entitled “Understanding pastoralism and framing the argument for advocacy”. The aim was to discuss how pastoralism is presented in development and research projects and in advocacy and lobbying.

The content of the webinar came from the pastoral development orientation framework that Saverio Krätli recently developed for Misereor and its partners in Ethiopia. Based on this framework, CELEP developed a paper entitled “Pastoralists turn variability into food“, which presents the absolute minimal shared understanding of pastoralism by CELEP and suggests what this implies for advocacy work. During the webinar, Saverio presented the key points in the paper, and representatives of pastoralist civil society organisations in Eastern Africa reacted in an interesting exchange on the use of words and terminology when talking about pastoralism. You can find the report on the discussion here.
