The International Land Coalition (ILC) believes that fair and effective monitoring of the ongoing conversion and fragmentation of rangeland ecosystems is needed in order to gain a thorough understanding of the trends and their implications. Monitoring should also lead to informed and participatory decision-making on land use and investments in rangelands, and on the trade-offs involved. It therefore created a Rangeland Observatory. The video explains the concept and aim of this initiative. Opportunities to take part include providing data, hosting research or being a focal point for a particular rangeland ‘hotspot’ vulnerable to large-scale conversion. Organisations, communities, individuals and administrations interested in contributing to this initiative should contact the Rangelands Observatory (rangelands@landcoalition.info).
