j. Conduct soil and water conservation activities through community mobilization (p.47)
This activity consists of:
- undertaking soil and water conservation activities ‘in order to prevent soil erosion and gully formation on agricultural and grazing land’; this to be done through the mobilization of people and productive safety-net programs;
- planting wind breaks around farms to prevent soil erosion;
- conducting activities to improve soil fertility and protection from gully formation, increasing production and productivity, and improving the ‘production of grazing grass’ (sic);
- establishing procedures for mobilizing people in water and soil conservation works;
- transferring best practices in natural resource development and conservation to pastoral areas from other parts of Ethiopia and implementing them ‘at least in areas where people have voluntarily settled’;
- undertaking ‘natural resource development and conservation practices based on the life style and livelihood of the people and ecology in pastoral areas’; this to be done through the mobilization of people.
