Pastoralists’ relationship with the environment – Kenyan perspective

Every year, the Indigenous Peoples and Development Branch within the Division for Inclusive Social Development of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs organises an international expert group meeting (EGM) on a theme recommended by the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and endorsed by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The theme of the EGM in January 2024 was “Indigenous Peoples in a Greening Economy”.

At the EGM, Malih Ole Kaunga from IMPACT (Indigenous Movement for Peace Advancement and Conflict Transformation) in Laikipia, northern Kenya, presented a paper (7pp) on “Indigenous Peoples’ relationship with the environment”, in which he focuses on the beliefs and knowledge of mobile pastoralists – men, women and youth.
