Pastoralists influence climate-related policy in Kenya

SNV (Netherlands Development Organisation) leads the Voices for Change Partnership (V4CP) programme together with IFPRI (International Food Policy Research Institute) with funds from the Netherlands Government. V4CP works with civil society organisations (CSOs) worldwide to bridge the gap between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their implementation within society, especially in low-income and marginalised communities. It does so by strengthening the capacity of local CSOs to influence stakeholders and decision-makers with solid and contextualised evidence in order to embed the interests of communities within government policy and practice.

The blog “Story of change: including pastoralists’ voices in formulating climate-related policies in Kenya” (November 2018) by SNV explains how local CSOs worked with national and local governments in Kenya to ensure that the voices of pastoralists are included in the review of Kenya’s National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP). Close collaboration with the government enabled the CSOs to organise several participatory fora at county level to ensure that pastoralists’ priorities were included in the strategic objectives of the second NCCAP.
