Pastoralist education & peacebuilding in Ethiopia

The UNICEF study “Pastoralist education and peacebuilding in Ethiopia: results and lessons learned” (2015, 35pp), by Elizabeth King and Chrissie Monaghan of New York University, aims to strengthen peacebuilding through initiatives designed to increase access to good-quality education for remote and marginalised communities, particularly mobile peoples. The study focused on the Afar, Benishangul Gumuz, Gambella and Somali Regional States of Ethiopia. It explores how UNICEF-supported Alternative Basic Education (ABE) centres for pastoralist and agropastoralist children and youth might advance peacebuilding and increase resilience in conflict-affected communities. It also explores opportunities for UNICEF to work with partners to improve implementation of ABE programming.
