The Global Alliance for the International Year of Rangelands & Pastoralists (IYRP) has prepared a position paper “Pastoralism and protected areas” for the 16th Conference of Parties of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16) in December 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Specific groups of pastoralists are not mentioned in this paper, but it would also apply to pastoralism and conservation interventions in Eastern Africa.
The main message is that the IYRP Global Alliance calls upon States, protected-area authorities, organisations of the UN system, other international and regional organisations, including global conservation organisations, and other relevant stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector and academia to uphold the rights of pastoralists, to recognise their role in sustainable rangeland management and biodiversity conservation in protected areas and wider landscapes, and to support conservation measures that contribute to pastoral livelihood resilience, including indigenous and local community-conserved areas that support pastoral livestock systems.
