Pastoral displacement in northern Kenya

A range of factors has led to the displacement of thousands of pastoralists in northern Kenya. This situation has been under-reported and under-studied, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in northern Kenya have received little assistance. Against this backdrop, the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) of the Norwegian Refugee Council made a scoping study on pastoralist displacement in northern Kenya to draw attention to the plight of IDPs and the consequences of their displacement. The findings were presented in Nairobi on 15 November 2011 to representatives of the Kenyan Government, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Internal Displacement, and the diplomatic, academic and civil society communities. The funding are summarised in this 5-page report.
