The book Pastoral development in Ethiopia: trends and the way forward (2019, 100 pp) by Esayas Nigatu Gebremeskel, Solomon Desta and Girma Kassa – published by the World Bank and IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development) – analyses the impact of investments in pastoralism in Ethiopia over the past 50 years, reviews current literature on pastoral and agropastoral development, and assesses the socio-economic conditions affecting pastoralist and agropastoralist communities. It proposes: i) livelihood support for improved pastoral and agropastoral production; ii) livelihood diversification and improved agropastoral extension; iii) integrated rangeland and water development and secure access to key resources; iv) transformation and commercialisation of the livestock industry; v) enhanced access to and use of basic social and economic services; vi) enhanced social protection and disaster-risk management; and vii) institutional and human capacity development. It also calls for interventions that are sensitive to conflict, mainstream gender issues and nutrition, and emphasise employment of women and youth, climate change adaptation, information technology, action-oriented research, and knowledge management.
