NRM by pastoralists in northern Kenya

The Web article “Shalom empowers Turkana and Pokot communities on management and resolution of natural resource-based conflicts” introduces the Natural Resource Management (NRM) Project being implemented in Turkana and West Pokot Counties in northern Kenya, an area long marked by inter-ethnic conflict caused mainly by competition over access to and control of water, pasture and land. With the discovery of other valuable resources such as oil and gold, there is now increased and wider interest in land and boundary demarcations. The devolution of power to County governments has also influenced communities’ perceptions on governance of resources within the established political and administrative boundaries, causing new and more complex conflicts. The NRM Project seeks to address the issues of insufficient community capacity to prevent and manage conflicts over natural resources and lack of women’s involvement in peace-building processes. This article describes the project’s approach and initial results.
