Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS)

The Livestock Emergency Guidelines & Standards (LEGS) Handbook (3rd edition, 2023, 390pp) is a set of international guidelines for designing, implementing and evaluating livestock interventions to help livestock-keepers affected by humanitarian crises to retain their livelihoods. The LEGS Project, coordinated by Cathy Watson, aims to improve the quality and livelihoods impact of livestock-related projects during emergencies: it helps identify the most appropriate and timely livestock interventions and provides standards, key actions and guidance notes for each type of intervention, applying a participatory and gender-sensitive approach. The manual was developed through a broad consultation process, drawing on good practice worldwide. It uses case studies to illustrate experiences and approaches, describing both process and impact. Many of these cases come from pastoral systems in Eastern Africa (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Sudan).

The manual was published by Practical Action Publishing (Rugby, UK); the French, Spanish and Arabic versions will be out by October 2023.
