In the scoping paper “Innovations for pastoralists and agro-pastoralists in fragile and conflict-affected areas” (2022, 36pp), Christabell Makokha et al identify 38 innovations for pastoralists and agro-pastoralists in the Horn of Africa and the Sahel.
The study was carried out because it had been recognised that, in recurring and protracted humanitarian crises, there were few approaches that build the resilience of pastoralist livelihoods and communities. This would include documenting where promising approaches and technologies are adapted or replicated for wider reach and impact. In this paper, “innovation” is regarded as the development of new solutions, improvements on existing solutions, or advancements in product or service design, processes or business models.
The SPARC (Supporting Pastoralism and Agriculture in Recurrent and Protracted Crises) project of the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) aims to generate evidence and address knowledge gaps to build the resilience of millions of pastoralists, agropastoralists and farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.
