Improving pastoral tenure security in East Africa

The CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM) hosted by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has produced a 2-page Outcome Note, written by Fiona Flintan of ILRI (International Livestock Research Institute), on “Improving tenure security for pastoralists in East Africa” (Oct 2020). It gives a very brief summary of PIM support to work by ILRI and partners that contributed to adoption of a woreda (district) participatory land-use planning approach in Ethiopia and to expansion of the joint village land-use planning approach in Tanzania. These approaches were designed to lead to more secure land-tenure rights for pastoralists in rangeland areas. The Outcome Note includes links to several papers and blogs about the work as well as to the manual for Woreda Participatory Land Use Planning (WPLUP) for Pastoral and Agropastoral Areas in Ethiopia.
