In its Best Practices Note No. 3 entitled “Assisting Pastoralists” (2013, 11pp), the US American charity organisation ECHO describes how it works with pastoralists. The Director of ECHO’s East Africa Impact Center, Erwin Kinsey, wrote the note based mainly on his experience in rural development in Tanzania. He describes what pastoralism is and the socio-political-cultural, environmental and economic challenges it faces. He highlights principles to guide decision-making when designing interventions among pastoralists and refers to some good practices related to livestock and rangeland management, including water harvesting, as well as supplementary crop farming in pastoral areas and appropriate sources of energy. The note includes an extensive list of references and links to more information on some of the practices described.
