Dialogue on pastoralism at UN Food Systems Summit 2021

In the lead-up to the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) 2021 in Nairobi, Kenya, the Hon. Mohamed Guleid of the Frontier Counties Development Council convened an Independent Dialogue on “Transforming pastoralism sustainably & innovatively to address key drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition: a multi-sector dialogue from Kenya’s frontier countries”. This dialogue on 18 May was organised by GAIN (Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition) and CELEP and included panelists, among others, from CELEP member organisations: Concern Worldwide (Ms Amina Abdullah, Horn of Africa Regional Programme) and Centre for Research & Development in Drylands (CRDD) in northern Kenya (Hussein Wario).

The themes covered were:

  • Pastoralism as a sustainable food system: opportunities, challenges and lessons learnt through devolution
  • Leveraging on enabling and coherent legal & policy frameworks to anchor pastoralism as a sustainable food system
  • Ending food insecurity & malnutrition through sustainable multisectoral platforms among shock-prone communities in the arid and semiarid lands (ASALs)
  • How to increase private-sector investment and financing tools and to de-risk food systems/livestock subsector in the ASAL counties
  • Incentivising food systems’ change towards equitable market access among pastoralist communities

The UNFSS contributes to the Decade of Action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, each of which relies to some degree on healthier, more sustainable and more equitable food systems. The Independent Dialogues brought together a diversity of stakeholders, including voices that are seldom heard, such as those of pastoralists.
