In the article “Development interventions in pastoralist areas: a new decision matrix to identify win-win situations and no-go zones” published in the web-based journal Solutions (2017, Vol. 8, No. 3), Pablo Manzano introduces a methodology to allow outsiders from development programmes to quickly comprehend the logic of pastoral systems. This involves a respectful bottom-up approach based on a decision matrix to analyse practices of pastoralists and interventions proposed for pastoralists. The matrix, designed and implemented by the World Initiative for Sustainable Pastoralism (WISP) between 2011 and 2015, helps to refine analysis by both pastoralists and development decision-makers by improving understanding and discarding unsubstantiated misconceptions. Pastoralists use the matrix as a tool for self-reflection on their practices and opportunities for improvement. Judging by the literature cited, the tool is based on largely experiences in pastoralist development in Africa, above all, in Eastern Africa.
