According to the IGAD Center for Pastoralist Areas & Livestock Development, the contribution of livestock production to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been greatly underestimated in Kenya. The policy brief “The contribution of livestock to the Kenyan economy” (2013, 4pp) estimates that livestock provide about 45% of output from the country’s agriculture and forestry sector. It also examines the direct-use benefits of livestock to the Kenyan economy, including e.g. the considerable insurance value of livestock for pastoralists. The brief is based on a working paper (2011, 62pp) with the same title.
