Conflict, climate change, food security & mobility in Karamoja

The report “Conflict, climate change, food security and mobility in the Karamoja Cluster: a study to analyse interactions among conflict, food security, climate change, migration and displacement factors” (2023, 40pp) presents the findings of a study made between November 2021 and April 2022. The study analysed resource-based conflicts in the Karamoja Cluster to find out about their causes and the major parties, impacts and trends, with a view to recommending strategies for conflict-sensitive and peace-responsive programming to strengthen food and nutrition security and enhance the capacity of communities to adapt to climate change.

The focus was on the border areas Kenya–Uganda, Uganda–South Sudan, Kenya–Ethiopia and South Sudan–Ethiopia, where pastoral and agropastoral livestock keeping is the main land use and livelihood system. In the course of the study, a team of experts led by Michael Odhiambo visited these different parts of the Karamoja Cluster and interacted with diverse stakeholders from communities, relevant government departments and non-state actors.

The report brings an analysis of the dynamics of conflict and peace in the Cluster; the interactions between conflict and food security, climate change, displacement and migration; and the major challenges experienced and lessons learnt in programming and implementation of conflict management and peacebuilding initiatives in the Cluster.

It was published by FAO, IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development) and Interpeace Eastern and Central Africa.
