CELEP participation in annual global meetings on pastoralism

As a partner in the Pastoralist Knowledge Hub (PKH) of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), CELEP took part in the annual PKH Partners’ Meeting at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy, on 18–19 November 2019. As neither of CELEP’s Focal Points in Europe or Eastern Africa was available to attend this meeting, Ann Waters-Bayer from the CELEP member organisation Agrecol Association for AgriCulture & Ecology represented CELEP in the meeting. Achievements of PKH were presented, as were the results of the external evaluation of PKH. Several projects and initiatives related to pastoralism were presented, including the UNEP gap analysis on rangelands and pastoralism, in which Ann was involved on behalf of CELEP as co-author of the report. The final report on the annual PKH meeting is forthcoming.

Immediately after the PKH meeting, several participants stayed on for the annual partners’ meeting of the global component of the International Land Coalition (ILC) Rangelands Initiative (RI). The global coordinator invited CELEP to join this meeting on 21–22 November 2019, likewise in Rome. The participants reflected on achievements of the RI global component during the last year and considered new opportunities opening up with regard to rangelands. They discussed ILC’s new operating model and the implications for the RI over the next three years. They outlined a plan regarding priority activities and events as well as the strategy, structure and modalities of the RI in the next three years. CELEP was welcomed as a global member that can play a key role in facilitating access of the RI to the European Commission and European Parliament and in sharing information on global rangelands governance and tenure through CELEP’s extensive global network.
