At the 76th Annual Conference of the Society for Range Management (SRM), its International Affairs Committee (IAC) and the IYRP ISG (International Support Group for the International Year of Rangelands & Pastoralists) convened an online symposium on “Global issues influencing success for the IYRP, 2026 and beyond”. This was on 7 February 2023, the week before the hybrid SRM conference in Boise, Idaho (12–16 Feb), where the IYRP featured in several sessions. The IYRP symposium contributions addressed rangeland stewardship, rangeland restoration, afforestation of rangelands and water governance issues.
CELEP helped to bring voices from pastoralists from the USA, Argentina, Mongolia, Tanzania and Hungary into the conference through a compilation of clips from five films on CELEP’s Perspectives on Pastoralism Film Festival website and the IYRP website. The 10-minute compiled film “Voices from the global rangelands” was produced by Patrick Augenstein and funded by VSFB/CELEP. It was also shown in the opening plenary of SRM conference on 13 February.
A film from the CELEP festival “Home on the range” from Kyrgyzstan was also shown during a presentation on the forthcoming SRM film festival on rangelands in Canada, Mexico and the USA.
An IYRP news item on the 3-hour symposium can be found here and a link to the complete recording of the IYRP symposium, including the CELEP film, can be found here.
