The report on CELEP activities in 2020 is structured according to the action plan drawn up in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in 2019. However, because of COVID-19, several events were postponed to 2021 or transformed into online events, such as the six webinars and the virtual AGM in late 2020.
Shortly before the pandemic broke out, CELEP managed to organise a visit to a livestock market by two Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who were on mission in Ethiopia with the Development (DEVE) Committee. Later, CELEP informed several MEPs on the importance and value of pastoralism prior to their vote on a report about security issues in the Horn and Sahel. CELEP also posed written questions to the Parliament about the impact of COVID-19 and locusts on pastoralists, and was invited to a DEVE Committee session to explain this in more detail.
Members of CELEP continue to be heavily involved in the campaign for an International Year of Rangelands & Pastoralists (IYRP), and played a major role in setting up the IYRP “online booth” for the FAO Committee on Agriculture before it endorsed the proposal.
These and other lobbying and advocacy activities are highlighted in the 18-page activity report, along with information about achievements in terms of communications and knowledge management (e.g. publications, CELEP website and Googlegroup) and institutional issues, above all, the self-mandated external evaluation of CELEP.
